Expedicion de las Americas Jeep CJ-7 Restoration Episode 1 – Meet Edla
In 1978, Mark A. Smith and a team from Jeepers Jamboree embarked on the longest overland expedition to date, a full crossing of the Americas from Tierra del Fuego to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. This included the Darien Gap, the nearly impenetrable jungle between Colombia and Panama. Edla (short for Expedicion de las Americas) is one of the five Jeep CJ-7s that completed the trip.
We recently acquired Edla from the original family, and will be performing a bumper-to-bumper restoration. We won’t be tampering with the beautiful rust, dents, and patina…our goal is to make her mechanically new while preserving her heritage.

Trails 411 Jeep Wrangler JL Finished – at least for now
The Trails 411 Jeep Wrangler JL is built and fully tested on pre-runs for the Nexen 25 rock crawling event as well as during the event itself. The Nexen Roadian MTX 25 hour Challenge consisted of 10 black diamond trail run in 25 hours from 3:00 PM on a Tuesday to 4:00, PM on the following day. Starting in Cougar Buttes running Chicken Rock, Bull Frog, Cake Walk and Split Finger, the event then moved to Johnson Valley and the Turkey Claw trail. From there we travel down Rattlesnake Canyon at night to Motino Wash, on to Heartbreak Ridge then into Big Bear for a refueling and breakfast stop. The last trails were Holcomb Creek and John Bull, both Jeep Badge of Honor Trails. The JL performed exceptionally well.

One of ONLY FIVE In The World. 1978 Jeep CJ-7 A Rolling Piece Of History!
In 1978, Mark A. Smith, known as the Grandfather of Jeeping, led a group of five CJ-7s on an epic, 21,500-mile journey across two continents, Expedicion de las Americas.
Rick Péwé joins Adventure Architects’ Chris Collard, this Jeep’s new owner, to discuss the history of this unique Jeep and pay tribute to the adventurous souls that tackled the Darien Gap. They also discuss Chris’ plans for an upcoming conservation project on this one-of-a-kind CJ-7. Stay tuned to Gone-GPN for this upcoming tech series.
There are two great books on the expedition, Driven by a Dream by Mark A. Smith (www.jeepjamboreeusa.com) and 31 Days in the Darien by Kevin Arnold ([email protected])
We also want to acknowledge and honor Loren and Patty Upton, intrepid
modern-day explorers who completed a solo crossing of the Darien Gap in
1986 in the Sand Ship Discovery, their Jeep CJ-5.
We extend a big thank you to Jeep Jamboree USA for allowing use of vintage videos, images, and music. We also thank great BFGoodrich, Warn, Rugged Ridge, Omix, Rancho Suspensions, Superlift, Bestop, Tuffy Security, and Hi-Lift for their support.
